ABSTRACT

In this and the following chapter, we discuss some special statistical topics of importance to reference ranges. These include (1) statistical methods for calculating reference ranges, (2) sample size (the number of reference subjects in study}, (3) criteria for deciding whether to develop separate reference ranges for subgroups in the population, (4) the treatment of outlying observations, and (5) the transference of reference ranges. This chapter is devoted to the first of these topics.
