ABSTRACT
Before proceeding into the main topic of photodynamic therapy, it is appropriate to consider briefly some other areas where light is used (or has been used) in the treatment of disease. Historical and general descriptive aspects of some of these topics have already been introduced in section 1.2. Here we shall concentrate on molecular aspects, including chemical mechanisms where they are known or can be inferred.
