ABSTRACT

In framed structures the internal columns normally carry large axial loads with relatively small moments, while the external columns carry moderate loads with larger moments. The sizing of the column can be achieved by assuming that the magnitude of the design axial load Asd is given as shown below:

Nsd > 0.45AC / cd for low-ductility buildings

Asd > 0.40AC / cd for medium-ductility buildings

Asd > 0.35AC / cd for high-ductility buildings

where / cd = f ckl 1.5 is the design concrete strength, N sd is the design axial load and A c is the column cross-sectional area.
