ABSTRACT
This chapter reviews the main factors that affect the hydraulic performance of a bridge, explains why they are important, and illustrates their effect. Many of these variables are related to the geometry of the structure and are summarised in Fig. 3.1. I t is these factors in combination wi th the types of flow encountered (as described in Chapter 2) that give each bridge its own unique hydraulic characteristics.
