ABSTRACT
The word alcohol comes from the Arabic al-kohol, which means ‘‘fine antimony powder.’’ In the Middle
Ages, alcohol was considered the quintessence, the purest part of wine. This ancient meaning is still true, and the word alcohol is commonly used for ethanol, the main compound of fermented beverages.
