ABSTRACT

Injection mold design is also a complex and iterative process, during which changes are inevitable. In the geometry-based CAD systems, the low-level model does not preserve the design intent of the designers. The lack of associativity between the model entities means that a design change must be mapped to a set of changes of low-level geometric entities, and is therefore time-consuming. On the other hand, the construction of an injection mold is not a straightforward task even when using the high-level and powerful operations of a solid modeler. It is important that the modeling environment supports reuse of existing parts, such as standardized parts and part families in a new design. Reuse of existing parts requires a CAD system to be able to change the current design conveniently. So a useful CAD system for injection mold design should be able to automatically propagate changes throughout the whole model.
