ABSTRACT

Most of the grating devices studied in the previous chapters allow the resonant excitation of guided modes or surface plasmons (see chap. VI.3). Other devices are also known to exhibit electromagnetic resonances: Airy resonances for Fabry-Pérot's [VILI], guided mode or surface plasmon resonances for prism couplers, etc. Both Fabry-Pérot's and distributed couplers (with prism or grating) are "open" resonators since they give rise to a radiated electromagnetic field in the outside media. It will be seen, that due to their "open" feature, these resonators involve leaky modes.
