ABSTRACT
The stabilit y o f th e hemoglobin s depend s i n grea t par t o n th e a-helica l con -
formation o f thei r polypeptid e chains . I f an amin o aci d in th e a-helica l regio n o f
the protei n i s replace d b y proline , th e a heli x i s broke n a t tha t point . W h e n thi s
happens i n hemoglobin, i t easily becomes denatured . Thes e condition s ar e agai n
characterized b y re d cel l lysi s an d th e clinica l symptom s o f hemolyti c anemia .
