ABSTRACT

Stretto di Messina S.p.A. (SdM) is a state owned company established by law1 in 1981 as the concessionaire for the financing, design, construction and operation of the fixed link between Sicily and the Italian mainland. It is

thus responsible for the entire process, from a technical and operational as well as financial point of view. SdM has an equity capital equal to approximately €383 million (at 31st December 2006). SdM's shareholders include the main Italian public com­ panies for transport infrastructures and the two regions directly connected by the link. More specifically, SdM's shareholders are: - ANAS S.p.A. now2 the main shareholder. ANAS is the state authority for

roads and motorways that directly operates the entire major roadway and motorway network (6,500 km of motorways and 20,000 km of national roads) on behalf of the Italian Government.
