ABSTRACT

Example projects are presented in this chapter to illustrate investigation, design, remediation, and construction elements of several track substructurerelated projects. The first case study examines the diagnosis of the root cause of a chronic subgrade problem and remedial work that fixed the problem. The second and third case studies deal with substructure aspects of track design: one considers new track design within an existing right-of-way as part of a double-tracking project and the other considers new track on a completely new corridor. The fourth case study looks at embankment instability issues, including investigation, analysis, design, and remediation. Although a standalone case study is not included, track drainage is addressed as an essential element of every case study presented in this chapter.
