ABSTRACT

The oral cavity is a unique structure that serves a multitude of functions. It is the gateway to the aerodigestive tract and is vital in the production of normal speech. It houses many specific and highly specialized structures: the mandible, the teeth, the tongue, the palate and the oropharynx. It is lined by mucosa, which is lubricated by saliva. This mucosa covers muscles that provide the motor functions that facilitate speech and swallowing. Furthermore, it is rich in nerve endings, which provide us with the special sense of taste as well as exquisite sensation that converts eating from a daily task necessary for survival to one of the most pleasurable activities.
