ABSTRACT

Sarcocysts are ubiquitous in cervids, and numerous species of Sarcocystis in cervids have been named. Whether Sarcocystis species are host-specic for cervid species is not known. Cross transmission in animals raised in captivity and/or DNA sequence data will be necessary to prove or disprove host specicity.285,354,380,586,704,858 Available information on wild Cervidae, other large animals, and marine mammals are summarized in Tables 18.1 through 18.3, but even morphological information is incomplete for most species. Examples of species detected but considered inquirendae are given in Table 18.4.
