ABSTRACT

Sarcocystis species, especially S. neurona, are morphologically and biologically related to the coccidians T. gondii and N. caninum that are economically important pathogens. For every paper indexed in PubMed (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed) from the last 10 years referencing any species of Sarcocystis, more than 10 appeared that referenced T. gondii. As explained in Chapter 3, the vast amount of research on T. gondii has facilitated investigations on genetics of S. neurona. The progress with the genetics of S. neurona is summarized in Chapter 3.
