ABSTRACT

Sarcocystis was rst reported by Miescher in 1843 as “milky white threads” in the skeletal muscle of a deer mouse caught in his house in Switzerland.1191 Miescher did not specify the zoological name of the mouse. Subsequently, the parasite found in the house mouse (Mus musculus) was named Sarcocystis muris (Figure 1.1) and is believed to be the same as that discovered by Miescher. The life cycle of Sarcocystis remained unknown until 1972 (Table 1.1).
