ABSTRACT

A single intra-articular injection of MTX-conjugated liposome in a rat antigen-induced arthritis model was demonstrated to signicantly reduce knee swelling and inhibit the histological progression of the arthritis in comparison with MTX alone, with a concomitant reduction in interleukin (IL)-1β messenger RNA (mRNA) expression in the synovial tissue (Williams et al. 2001). Liposomal conjugation of MTX also reduced the systemic toxicity observed with an equivalent dose of the free drug (Williams et al. 2000).
