ABSTRACT

Official safety reports testify to the decreasing accident rate. It is sometimes difficult to cross-reference the results, since the references and assumptions often vary, but one can still uncover some significant statistics. Thus, according to Boeing (Boeing Statistical Summary of Commercial Jet Airplane Accidents – Worldwide Operations 1959-2012) and ICAO (ICAO 2013 Safety Report), between 2006 and 2012 air traffic around the world increased by 44% to reach 24.4 million departures and 52.8 million flight hours, while the rate of ‘fatal accidents’ plummeted to 1.4 per million departures.
