ABSTRACT

There are a variety of different categories of employees within a single company, based upon the type of work the employees perform. Within the context of workers’ compensation, the categories, which attempt to denote the type of work performed by individuals, are called “classifications.” These classifications are the fundamental building blocks upon which the entire rating system is based. The most widely used classification system for workers’ compensation was developed and is administered by the National Council on Compensation Insurance (NCCI), which currently includes over 600 different job classifications. Although no single classification describes every individual’s job duties exactly, employees are categorized into the classification that best describes the work they perform.
