ABSTRACT

Nociceptors are which carries pain stimulus. • Any physical, chemical, thermal or mechanical stimulus like heat, cold, pres-

sure activates these nociceptors. • These are free nerve endings found in all body tissues. • They carry pain stimulus to higher centers. • Once a nociceptors is stimulated, it releases a neuropeptide, which initiates

electrical impulse along the afferent fibers toward the spinal cord. • These afferent fibers are of two types: • A delta fiber • C delta fibers

1. Acute pain 2. Chronic pain 3. Somatic or visceral pain 4. Referred pain 5. Emotional or psychogenic pain Acute Pain: It is a warning. It seems obvious that pain enables an organism

to sense tissue damage and avoid further damage, thus facilitating survival. The damage to tissues by mechanical, thermal, chemical agents, directly activates neurons signal in the form of noxious stimuli, the initial phasic stage of pain takes on a tonic persistence until healing can occur. Acute pain can be thought of as both a sensation of actual or impending tissue damage as an indication for rest.
