ABSTRACT

Fungi are a group of eukaryotes which are unicellular or multicellular, or syncytial spore-producing organisms with approximate size ranging from 2 to 10 µm, and may be either beneficial or harmful. The fungal cell contains membrane bound organelles like nuclei, mitochondria, golgi apparatus, endoplasmic reticulum, lysosomes, etc., and remarkably ergosterols in the external membrane forming a rigid structure with the help of chitin molecules. Fungi possess 80S ribosomes and the cell division exhibit mitosis. Basic requirement of fungi includes water, and oxygen, and perhaps fungi are said as chemoheterotrophs (require organic compounds for both carbon and energy sources), osmotrophic (obtain nutrients by absorption), saprophytes (lives on decaying matter) or parasites (lives on living matter) and there are no obligate anaerobes. In general, lipids and glycogen are the storage form and the reproduction occurs either asexually and/or sexually.
