ABSTRACT
As human beings, we cannot help but be awed by the stunning symmetry of atoms in a crystal. But as engineers and scientists, we are interested in matter for more pragmatic reasons. We have to ask how it might be useful as an ingredient in something we make. Can we use materials in new ways if they are in smaller pieces? e short answer is yes, and hence a chapter on nanomaterials. e longer answer follows.
