ABSTRACT

Pomegranate fruits are categorized within the group of berries. There are many small arils within the fruits wrapped to the inside of leathery peel. Previously, pomegranate plants were thought to belong to their own botanical family, the Punicaceae. Recent molecular studies suggest that the Punica genus might be considered within the Lythraceae family (Graham et al. 2005). There is only one genus within this family, the Punica. The Punica genus includes two species, with the names of: P. granatum L. and P. protopunica Balf.
