ABSTRACT

Agroecology has emerged as an approach that helps us to better understand the ecology of traditional farming systems and respond to the mounting problems resulting from an increasingly globalized and industrialized agri-food system (Altieri 1987). In its early stages, agroecology mainly focused on “applying ecological concepts and principles to the design of sustainable agricultural systems” (Altieri 1987; Gliessman 1990).
