ABSTRACT

Accessibility to jobs, services or other destinations of interest, has long been recognized as key to the development of sustainable transport, land use and spatial planning strategies [1,2,3,4,5]. Increased emphasis on sustainable urban development has underlined the importance of accessibility for (i) economic development as it enables the movement of people and goods to support the functioning of the economy [6]; (ii) environmental objectives such as reducing greenhouse gas emissions and pollutants that result from different transport modes and how they are used [7]; and (iii) equitable access for all socio-economic groups to core services such as healthcare [8].
