ABSTRACT

In 1900, a Greek man diving for sponges discovered a shipwreck near the island of Antikythera. Among the statues, jewels, pottery, furniture, and bronze artwork recovered from the wreckage, there was a corroded green object about the size of a shoebox. It had dials and an intricate configuration of 30 bronze gears, very much like a clock. Later analyses showed that it had been under the sea for more than 2000 years and most likely came from ancient Greece.
