ABSTRACT

Manufactured products are made by assembling a number of components that may need to be joined together either permanently or semipermanently, where they can be taken apart for maintenance or repair purposes. Additionally, permanent joints are used for parts that do not require disassembly as in the case of car bodies, ships, and bridges. Manufacturing engineers should be aware of the different joining techniques, their principles, and limitations that ensure proper joint design and manufacture for a wide range of industrial applications. Figure 21.1 shows the different joining methods. In order to establish semipermanent joints, screws and bolts are commonly used. This chapter introduces the methods of establishing permanent joints.
