ABSTRACT

A microscope is dened as an instrument that magnies objects by means of lenses to reveal details that are invisible to the naked eye. It was only after the discovery of the rst microscope around 1590 by a Dutch spectacle maker, Zacharias Jensen, that it was realized there were certain living organisms so small in size that they were invisible to the naked eye and hence never believed to be in existence. The microscope opened new doors into the living world, bringing forth a realm of microorganisms. This gave concrete evidence to Louis Pasteur’s germ theory of disease. Thus began the science of microbiology.
