ABSTRACT

Obesity has reached epidemic proportions worldwide and has more than doubled since 1980. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) report, in 2008, 1.5 billion adults 20 and older were overweight, dened as a body mass index (BMI) greater than 25 kg/m2 [1]. According to more recent data from the 2009-2010 U.S. National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), the age-adjusted prevalence of obesity (BMI >30 kg/m2) was 35.5% (95% condence interval [CI] 31.9%–39.2%) among adult men and 35.8% (95% CI 34.0%–37.7%) among adult women [2].
