ABSTRACT

Initially, behavioral approaches grew out of Learning Theory1 and focused entirely on observable behaviors.

Subsequently, with the inuence of Social Learning Theory2 and Cognitive Behavior Therapy,3 treatments began to focus more on changing cognitions and feelings related to these behaviors. Most recently, approaches from third-generation theories such as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy4 have been incorporated within obesity programs. These approaches teach patients to accept their thoughts, rather than struggling to change them, and to focus on achieving their long-term values.
