ABSTRACT

The risk for weight rebound is due to unfavorable effects on hunger, the desire to eat, and food reward, along with a reduction in energy expenditure and possibly FFM. The requirements to achieve negative energy balance are sustained levels of hunger, food reward and satiation, sustained levels of energy expenditure, and sparing of FFM. In this

respect, high-protein diets should be successful over the long term through reducing feelings of hunger and sustaining fullness, as well as through favorable effects on energy expenditure and FFM, and reward homeostasis, all of which are important for adherence to any dietary treatment program.
