ABSTRACT

Two major factors in›uencing turfgrass maintenance budgets are the high costs of fuel and labor. Among the most time-consuming, labor-intensive cultural practice is mowing and clipping removal. Plant growth regulators (PGRs), which suppress the vertical shoot growth of turfgrasses, have the potential to signiœcantly reduce expenditures allocated to fuel and labor used in mowing operations. Some products improve color, density, environmental stress tolerance, and playability of golf course turfs. Some PGRs are effective in slowing turf growth under fences, on steep banks, and other dif-œcult to mow areas. Unfortunately, most PGRs will not uniformly suppress all grass or weed species in mixed stands.
