Land use science can be defined as an inclusive, interdisciplinary subject that focuses on material related to the nature of land use and land cover, their changes over space and time, and the social, economic, cultural, political, decision-making, environmental, and ecological processes that produce these patterns and changes.1 A variety of theories, methodologies, and technologies underpin research on land use science, and, consequently, a number of basic and applied science themes that are characteristic of land use research can be identified. These reflect the interdisciplinary and integrated analysis required to comprehend land use, as well as the role and importance of land use, land use change, and land management and policy, and the importance of land use for sustainability.2 Land use is also considered a central part of the functioning of the Earth system3 as well as reflecting human interactions with the environment at scales from local to global.
