ABSTRACT

Among the most commonly eaten fresh fruits, banana is a good source of pectin, potassium, vitamin C, and vitamin B6, and contains serotonin and 2-pentanone.1-4 Bananas are routinely recommended to patients to maintain or restore blood potassium levels because one large (8-9″ long) banana supplies approximately 500 mg of potassium.2 Bananas have a low glycemic index.5 They have been traditionally recommended for diarrhea management as part of the pediatric BRAT (bananas-rice-applesaucetoast) diet.6
