ABSTRACT

In this paper we analyze a finite element method for approximating scattering from a buried object using an integral representation and overlapping domains to truncate the finite element grid. The method has the advantage of being asymptotically exact, but avoids the need to compute singular integrals as is usually required for coupled finite element - boundary element methods. The analysis requires a non-standard adjoint problem which we discuss in detail. We also make some observations regarding the implementation of the method.
