ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the SIMPLE method for the numerical modelling of incompressible fluid flow problems. The methods include the vorticity-stream function approach and the primitive variable approaches such as the marker-and-cell, simplified MAC, solution algorithm and SIMPLE methods. Among these numerical methods the applications of the SIMPLE method to fluid flow modelling has been increasingly focused on in many materials processing problems. The SIMPLE stands for the Semi-Implicit Method for Pressure-Linked Equations. Substitution of the correct pressure field p into the discretized momentum equations yields the correct velocity field. The discretized equations for the velocity and pressure fields, equations and, must be set up at each of the nodal points including the boundary regions in order to solve the problems. Important improvements for obtaining solution accuracy and computational efficiency were made by adopting pressure interpolation on the free surface.
