ABSTRACT

Take a photograph or print a page. Light shining throughlayers of colored dyes or inks creates the color image. Print-ing inks and photographic dyes selectively subtract the red, green, and blue image components from white light, hence the name “subtractive color.” While some subtractive color images are projected, such as slides, most are prints, which can be viewed in any lighting. Inexpensive color prints are the ultimate value provided by subtractive color. This is the fourth chapter on image reproduction technology; it describes the basic principles that underlie all subtractive reproduction, some technology-specific details, and models for characterizing subtractive systems to device-independent color standards.
