ABSTRACT

Color described as numerical combinations of red, green, andblue intensity values is fundamental to digital color. It isthe encoding for colored pixels in images, and the mechanism for specifying the colors produced on a color display. Defining a brightness scale as numerical steps from dark to light is similarly fundamental to digital color. This chapter describes, in detail, RGB color and numerically defined brightness scales, emphasizing the use of colorimetric measurement to provide a quantitative, colorimetric foundation for such specifications. These concepts will appear again and again throughout the rest of this book.
