ABSTRACT

In several types of computer software have become available that allow algebra and calculus to be performed symbolically on a computer. In general, this is called computer algebra software, though its capabilities extend far beyond purely algebraic operations. For the software to function in the ways just described, it is necessary that the information specifying the functions involved, and the symbolic operations to be performed, is given to the computer in a very special manner. MAPLE is started by placing the mouse pointer arrow on the MAPLE icon seen on the screen when the computer is first switched on, and double clicking with the left mouse button. MAPLE is a valuable aid when carrying out mathematical operations and recording results in graphical form, but it is only really useful when the underlying mathematics is properly understood.
