ABSTRACT

As of 2012, 72% of the total U.S. population were getting their water from public water systems that add fluoride. Fluoridation in the United States is being practiced in over 8000 communities serving more than 126 million people. Residents of over 1800 communities serving more than 9 million people are consuming water that contains at least 0.7 mg/L fluoride from natural sources. Key facts about fluoride include the following:

• Fluoride is seldom found in appreciable quantities in surface waters and appears in groundwater in only a few geographical regions.
