ABSTRACT

Body weight and composition are important determinants of exercise and sport performance in a highly event-specic fashion, leading athletes to pursue extreme and occasionally dangerous techniques to alter anthropometrics to obtain an athletic advantage. These practices are most common for athletes competing in events with either a weight class or gure-sensitive component. Numerous dietary strategies are utilized for manipulation of body weight and composition such as dehydration, excessive energy restriction, and high protein diets in addition to other methods such as increased aerobic exercise or the use of saunas, diuretics, or excessive clothing. In addition to weight loss, some athletes seek weight gain for improved muscular strength and/or size. This chapter summarizes
