ABSTRACT

In this chapter, I explore several principles for sustaining sacred soil, principles that are latent in the biblical tradition. Numerous religious cultures have revered Earth as sacred and many still do. Many Indigenous Australian cultures afrm the spiritual in nature, especially the land and the soil. In the Western world, however, attitudes to the soil as a component of planet Earth have largely been associated with certain interpretations of the biblical tradition that no longer perceive the soil as sacredinterpretations that I would like to challenge. To this end, I will refer to sections of the Bible in a separate manner to other books and papers by the name of the Book, with chapter and verse numbers.
