ABSTRACT

When I was a child, we used to collect sheep dung to fertilize our vegetable garden. With my siblings, I crawled under shearing sheds to gather black pellets piled high from years of frightened sheep waiting their turn for the shears on the boards above. On our hands and knees, we shovelled the hard black peas into bags and dragged them out into the fresh air and sunshine. Back at our house, we poured the pellets onto the vegetable garden and my father dug them into the soil. We knew they helped the vegetables but had no idea how.
