ABSTRACT
Careful examination of the lives of real animals in the real world reveals the true complexities and dangers involved in the seemingly simple tasks of living and reproducing. These are completed only by the successful few. For most fishes, and indeed most animals, those that survive to adulthood are a tiny fraction of the offspring produced.
