ABSTRACT

The Fizz™ GSM telephone was introduced on the market in 1996, and has been praised in the independent press because of its 'unprecedented usability'. The Spark™ was introduced later in the same year and achieved similar acclaim, winning the Media Total Mobile Phone of the Year award primarily on the basis of the interface design. This paper describes the process by which this result was achieved, focusing on the activities of interaction design and human factors. The full integration of these disciplines was a key to the success, but a number of further issues are raised, including the need to adapt to changing requirements and the problems associated with the specification of innovative solutions.
