ABSTRACT

Sandwich composite systems consist of advantages of miscellaneous materials having low density, high strength and high exural resistance. They also possess the abilities of high-energy absorption and high load damping, sound and vibration insulation and adaptive qualities. Nowadays, these materials are used in innovative research and developments. Sandwich composite materials use a homogeneous or inhomogeneous core of soft foams and other hard materials. Such composite constructions are widely used in aircrafts, marines, spacecrafts, rails, automobiles and structural parts. Different newer materials are being tried for making cores, honeycombs and skin sheets, and also the scope of applications is widening day by day. Sandwich composite (Figure 6.1) is a multilayered material made by bonding the lightweight core material in between the two high-strength brereinforced laminated facings. These are used to fabricate the structural and machine components for large space stations, aircrafts, robot arms, underwater structures, marine uses, etc. In these applications, the sandwich constructions are in the form of beam element, different types of panels, rectangular and circular plates, shallow arch, etc.
