ABSTRACT

With the 1987 Brundtland Commission report (WCED 1987) came the global acceptance of the idea of sustainable development. Sustainable development involves planning for the future and developing within certain limits such that future generations will have the same access to resources as we do today, be these resources economic, social, or ecological (WCED 1987). Extending this concept to the forest, sustainable forest management has the broad goals of managing the forest in a way that is socially, ecologically, and economically sustainable, that is, that will allow future generations to benefit from the forest as a source of social values, ecological resources, and revenue (Pavilainen 1994).
