ABSTRACT

Despite the disdain poured on its plans by CTG supporters-and despite the opposition of the 1984 banking report-EuroRoute remained a serious contender, partly at least because of widespread misunderstandings about the CTG plans. But EuroRoute also had top-level political support, particularly in the UK. Mrs Thatcher’s preference for a drivethough scheme meant it was her choice. Her Trade and Industry Secretary Lord Young also thought it the best option, because it would create the most jobs and because he was worried that a rail-only scheme would present the rail unions with too much power.
