ABSTRACT

The problems of classication and prediction arise frequently. In recent decades, one of the most common approaches has been ROC analysis for assessing the performance of diagnostic systems, technologies, and practices (collectively called diagnostic systems in this chapter). Many topics related to the evaluation of diagnostic tests have been thoroughly discussed in recent textbooks and have been examined in this book. However, the eld of classi-cation is still developing and evolving. The area of ROC analysis, in particular, has increasingly been enriched with approaches that address new and challenging problems with innovative techniques that better address old but challenging questions. The complex nature of those problems encountered in medical and other diagnostic disciplines has led to the development of extensions of the conventional ROC analysis.
