ABSTRACT

This category consists of antimicrobial bodysoaps, handsoaps, towelette handwipes, and other associated products. The purpose of these types of products is to reduce transient, potentially pathogenic microorganisms picked up in the environment (e.g., countertops, coins, door handles, etc.). These types of prod ucts are also often intended to remove excess normal microbial flora found particularly in moist body areas. 3 3 The types of clinical trials currently used in evaluating these products include the Healthcare Personnel handwash, the Modi fied Cade handwash, and the general use handwash for handsoaps, and axilla cup scrub sampling for bodysoaps. 2 2

The Healthcare Personnel handwash evaluation, as presented in the Fed eral Register, is rarely used in its entirety for evaluating consumer hand-cleansing antimicrobial products. The Modified Cade and the general use procedures are the most commonly used. For antimicrobial bodywash products, the axilla cup scrub and the full-body wash evaluations are used.
