To better understand topical antimicrobial product evaluations, it is necessary to discuss the anatomical structure of the skin, or integument. Human skin, the largest single organ, provides a continuous covering over the body. The skin constitutes about 16 percent of the total body weight, having an area of approximately 1.8 m2 for average-sized adults.23
