ABSTRACT

Reproductive Anatomy The equine ovary is suspended in the dorso-lateral abdomen by a portion of the broad ligament called the mesovarium. A thick connective tissue membrane called the tunica albuginea covers a majority of the ovary. The only exception is the ovulation fossa, a prominent depression on the ventral border of the equine ovary through which all ovulations take place. The ovulation fossa is lined by a layer of cells termed the germinal epithelium (Figure 3-1).
